Tanzania Internet Subscriptions 2019-2023
Tanzania’s access to the internet is facilitated through two Submarine Cables: 1) EASSy (Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System), one of the major undersea fiber optic cables that connect East African countries, including Tanzania, to the global internet network, and 2) SEACOM, another vital undersea cable system providing high-speed internet connectivity to Tanzania.
In addition, TEAMS (The East African Marine System) links Kenya’s Mombasa with Fujairah in the UAE, thus extending the gigabit submarine capacity to the rest of the East African countries: Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania through cross-border connectivity arrangements.
Tanzania’s internet users reached 35,885,592 in December 2023, of which 35,815,632 mobile internet subscriptions, 61,645 fixed wired internet subscriptions, and fixed wireless internet subscriptions.
The number of subscriptions rose from 25.8 million in 2019 to 35.9 million in 2023, indicating an average annual growth rate of 9.78% in internet subscriptions over the past five years.
Mobile internet penetration has reached 86% for 3G and 795 for 4G in 2023.
