On 8th November 2024, the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) held the 18th President’s Manufacturer of the Year Awards (PMAYA) at the Superdome in Masaki in Dar es Salaam.

The PMAYA ceremony, held annually since 2005, recognizes outstanding manufacturers in Tanzania for their contributions to the economy, innovation, and quality, celebrating their achievements in advancing the country’s industrial sector.

The objectives of the awards are threefold: to recognize excellence in manufacturing, to encourage innovation, and to promote inclusivity by welcoming all Tanzanian manufacturers to participate.

The Tanzania Cigarette Company (TCC) was named the overall Manufacturer of the Year, with additional awards presented across various categories such as food processing, plastics and rubber, insurance, and logistics and transport.

In his opening speech, the Executive Director of CTI, Leogard Tenga, expressed gratitude to the distinguished attendees, including the guest of honor, Hon. Dr Isidori Mpango, Vice President of Tanzania.

“We are gathered here to reflect on the state of our industrial sector and to celebrate our successes,” Tenga stressed, acknowledging the support of the event’s sponsors and partners, including government agencies, international organizations, and private-sector businesses.

In his address, the chairman of CTI, Paulo Makanza highlighted key achievements in improving conditions for Tanzania’s private sector.

“Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the government and private sector, we’ve made headway in overcoming challenges such as unreliable electricity, tax burdens, and currency shortages,” noted Makanza.

Makanza also underlined emerging issues, including a shortage of Tanzanian shillings and delays in contractor payments, while expressing optimism that these would soon be addressed.

The District Commissioner of Kinondoni commended recent industrial development within the Kinondoni area, which has significantly increased over the past three and a half years, noting their role in job creation and economic strengthening, and emphasized the importance of fostering a favorable investment climate with a focus on utilizing local labor and resources.

The Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Exaud Kigahe, stressed the industrial sector’s importance for Tanzania’s economic growth, noting government support through a new industrial policy and highlighting a robust industrial base as crucial for strengthening the national economy.

For his part, Mpango underscored the government’s commitment to fostering the industrial sector for Tanzania’s economic growth.

He encouraged further investment in intermediate goods industries, greater collaboration between the private sector and research institutions, and a collective effort to combat counterfeit goods.

Mpango also emphasized the need to fortify the sector against global shocks and to support Tanzania’s sustainable development goals.

Mpango highlighted: “The industrial and manufacturing sector is important as it employs many people in the country, and contributes to the growth of technology and the economy through the sales of products that are produced and sold both locally and internationally.”

“The industrial sector is one of the key sectors with a great potential to contribute to the country’s economy and development. Therefore, the government recognizes and values the importance of this sector,” added Mpango.
