SAA Back in Tanzania Dar es Salaam

South African Airways (SAA) officially resumed its daily flights connecting Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam on 20th January 2025, marking its return to the Tanzanian market after several years of absence.

The daily service departs OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at 10:00 PM (SAST) and arrives at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam at 2:30 AM (EAT). The return flight departs Dar es Salaam at 5:10 AM (EAT) and arrives in Johannesburg at 7:55 AM (SAST). The flight schedule is designed to accommodate both point-to-point and connecting passengers, providing flexibility for travelers.

The relaunch of this route is expected to significantly enhance bilateral relations between South Africa and Tanzania. Dar es Salaam, being the largest city in East Africa, is a crucial economic and logistical hub. The city also serves as a gateway to Tanzania’s popular tourist destinations, making the flights important for both business and leisure travelers.

The resumed flights will provide connectivity for industries and communities, facilitating the movement of people and goods, SAA explains. South Africa has been a major source of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Tanzania, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, precious metals, chemicals, and machinery. By reconnecting these two countries, the renewed flights are expected to unlock new opportunities for both trade and tourism, providing a boost to the economies of both nations.

SAA’s interim CEO, Professor John Lamola, commented on the significance of the relaunch, stating: “This flight is not simply a milestone for SAA, but a bridge connecting two of Africa’s most influential economies, strengthening the relationship between our nations.” He added, “It brings together industries, communities, and resources, unlocking greater prosperity, fostering collaboration, and generating new opportunities for trade, investment, and development for both our economies and people.”

South African Airways (SAA) exited the Tanzanian market in 2020 due to financial distress, operational challenges, and restructuring efforts. Facing significant losses, mismanagement, and the impact of COVID-19, SAA underwent a business rescue process, cutting unprofitable routes and reducing its fleet to stabilize operations. As part of this strategy, the airline suspended flights to Tanzania, including Dar es Salaam, and temporarily halted all operations for several months in 2020. This move aimed to focus on more viable routes and reduce costs during its restructuring phase.

With Tanzania’s growing economy, increasing demand for travel, and a renewed commitment to strengthening regional ties, SAA has decided to reinstate its flights to Dar es Salaam. The relaunch aligns with SAA’s broader strategy to strengthen its regional network. In recent months, the airline has expanded services to Harare (Zimbabwe), Lusaka (Zambia), and other African cities, as well as increasing flight frequencies to major African hubs.
