According to the World Investment Report of 2022 published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), foreign direct investment (FDI) to Tanzania rose by 35% to USD 922 million in 2021 from USD 695 million in 2020. 

Similarly, According to the World Bank (WB), Tanzania’s FDI net inflow at current prices was USD 921 million in 2021.

In 2020 the net inflow of FDI was USD 684 million, in 2019 it was USD 1.2 billion and in 2018 it was 971 million.

According to the Monthly Investment Bulletin-March 2023 released by the Tanzania Investment Center (TIC), the top five leading sources of FDI to Tanzania are China, the US, Mauritius, Spain, and India.

FDIs to Tanzania were drawn mostly to commercial buildings, manufacturing, and transportation sectors.

Tausi Kida, the permanent secretary in the President’s Office responsible for Planning and Investment, disclosed that from January 2021 to December 2023, the Tanzania Investment Center (TIC) registered 256 Chinese projects worth about USD 2.5 billion. The top five sectors for these projects were manufacturing, commercial building, agriculture, transportation, and services.
